Passions: The Emotions of God in the Hearts of Men

October 16-18, 2020 | Atrium

Speakers: Paul Pitts III and George Liepart IV

“Wild and blasphemous are they who ascribe passion to the divine nature.” This charge rocked the Christian world way back in the 5th century, written by a pastor named Theodoret. He argued that God could not suffer, so God couldn’t possibly feel painful emotions like sadness or longing. But is that true? And if so, what would that mean for us, who do suffer? Does God understand my suffering?

Brothers and sisters, our God is emotional. All throughout Scripture, God describes himself as full of anger, love, compassion, jealousy, hate, and joy. And against Theodoret, God says that he even grieves, and not just in the humanity of Christ but throughout redemptive history. In the Bible, God reveals that he feels and feels strongly! Our emotions didn’t come out of nowhere - they were designed to reflect the affectionate heart of God for his world, his people, and his glory.

This October, the Foundry will host a conference at IBC to dive deeper into the passionate heart of God. Pastors George Liepart and Paul Pitts from California will join us for a weekend of preaching, singing, eating, fellowship, and joyful meditation on the emotions of God. We’ll answer question like:

  • What does God feel, and why does he feel that way?

  • Are God’s emotions different from our emotions?

  • And what does the reality of God’s affections mean for our hearts today?

  • How can our passions mirror the heart of God?

The Foundry Conference will be held October 16-18 in the Atrium at IBC. There is no cost for the conference - it’s our joy to share this time with you. Please register at the link below to let us know if you plan to attend. More details about the conference can be found on that page, and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to email our Pastor of College Ministry, Dan Crabtree. We look forward to worshiping our glorious, passionate God with you this October!
