This year’s retreat theme is Rooted in Christ. Life tempts us to believe that our value is rooted in roles and relationships, but that’s shaky ground in changing seasons and circumstances, causing our sense of self to waver.

Drawing from the book of Ephesians and linked to life experiences, our speakers will guide us to discover the security and boundless beauty of our identity in Christ. Join us as we explore God’s loving design for us to be blessed, connected, strengthened and filled in Christ. Together, we can remain unshaken and encouraged to walk in the fullness of who we are, “Rooted in Christ”!

Join the women of IBC as we take time to refocus on God’s design for our lives. IBC’s own--Wendy Blackwell, Enid Walker, Kathy Holley, and Deshua Joyce--have four sessions ready to help us walk away blessed, connected, strengthened, and walking in Christ!

MEET OUR SPEAKERS

Wendy Blackwell was born and raised in Atlanta, GA. Wendy and Jay Blackwell spent many years moving around with the military and reported to Virginia for a three-year tour, eighteen years ago! Immanuel Bible Church is the main reason why they “sank roots in Virginia.”

Wendy’s Testimony: “Having grown up in the church and having the privilege of believing parents, I had heard the truths of God’s Word often as a child. At the age of 9, I understood the gravity of my sin as well as the resulting consequence and knew that only by trusting in what Christ accomplished through his life, death, burial, and resurrection could I be deemed right before a holy God. While on a mission trip during college, I was convicted by the passage in Matthew where Christ tells the scribes and Pharisees that they have it backwards. They are focused on being outwardly clean rather than understanding that the outward cleanliness is merely a result of an inward cleansing. This truth was comforting and freeing as I realized that my perfectionistic, people-pleasing, performance-based tendencies were all a reflection of my self-sufficiency. Surrendering to Christ’s inner working on my nature helped me move toward doing all things with excellence to please and honor Him. Thankfully, I am still learning and growing!”

Enid Walker was born in Winston-Salem, NC, and later moved to Raleigh, NC. She served on the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ for 16 years before coming to Immanuel Bible Church. She later rejoined Cru in 2009 and served on the Significance Project Leadership Team. She met her late husband, JT Walker, when they were freshman in college.

Enid’s Testimony: “I began my relationship with Jesus in October of my freshman year in college. I had grown up in a Christian home and had heard the stories of Jesus all my life. I believed they were true but saw no connection to my own life. After someone shared 1 John 1:9 with me I understood that if I confessed my sins, Jesus forgave my sins and cleansed me from all unrighteousness. The stories I heard about Jesus as a child made better sense. I trusted Jesus as my savior and His forgiveness of sin.”

Kathy Holley moved to Virginia when she was 10, and God used her parents and four other families to start Immanuel Bible Church. She met and married Steve Holley at Immanuel, where God called them into full time youth ministry, family ministry, and now Steve is Pastor of Ministries. Steve has served as a pastor at IBC for 36 years.

Kathy’s Testimony: “I came to Christ as a child when my mom explained what was written in a gospel pamphlet she was giving a friend. I keep at my desk a photo of the bench where I prayed with my mom, asking Jesus to be my Savior—a great reminder of God’s gift of grace to me!”

Deshua Joyce was born in a small town in New York. Tom Joyce, Pastor of Discipleship and Family at Immanuel Bible Church, is her husband. She was a high school English teacher for several years, and also worked with children with disabilities.

Deshua’s Testimony: “As a family we went to church but God’s plan of salvation was never preached. At the age of 24 I heard for the first time that Jesus wanted a personal relationship with me. In a very tiny church, I accepted His call.”

BREAKOUT SESSIONS

Women registered to attend the Spring Retreat should sign up at the registration area Friday evening or Saturday morning for the breakout session of your choice. Breakout sessions will take place after lunch on Saturday, March 23rd.

Space is limited, so please sign up early. Sign-up for all breakout sessions will be available near registration. Attendees can add their name to the waiting list after the breakout session is full, and sign-ups will be on a first come, first served basis.

  1. United in Christ: Biblical Womanhood in the Church From the Perspectives of Single and Married Women

    Time: Saturday 3:30-4:30 PM

    Speakers: Sarah Smith and Laura Corombos

    Join Laura and Sarah for a candid conversation on Biblical womanhood. They will discuss common misconceptions about single and married life and encourage unity within the church.

  2. Rooted in the Wait

    Time: Saturday 3:30-4:30 PM

    Speakers: Beth Azer and Sarah Pinkley

    We all have had periods of waiting. How can we wait while living in a world that has a hurry up and wait attitude? Join Sarah and Beth as they explore personal stories, Biblical examples, and practical Scriptural advice on how to wait on the Lord and be of good courage.

  3. A Conversation on Reconciliation in the Church

    Time: Saturday 3:30-4:30 PM

    Speakers: Enid Walker and Sonya Spillmann

    Please join Enid and Sonya for a candid conversation about the power of the gospel to bring racial reconciliation. This session is designed to raise awareness of racial barriers and strengthen our ability to develop relationships within the body of Christ.

  4. Peace and Purpose in Suffering

    Time:
    Saturday 3:30-4:30 PM

    Speakers:
    Leigh-Ann Reid and Megan Fagan

    Join us for a candid session where Leigh-Ann will speak about physical pain, and Megan will talk about the pain of loss. Hear personal accounts of how God works through suffering, and how we can find rest and hope in life’s storms.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

From massage to yoga/Pilates and karaoke, we have some great activities planned for those attending the retreat. For all activities except massages, sign up will be available at the registration area on Friday evening and Saturday morning. For massages, a sign up will be available online before you arrive at the retreat. A link to sign up for massages will be provided to all registered women one month prior to the retreat. We hope to see you at some of the activities we have planned!

Space is limited for most activities. Sign-ups will be handled on a first come, first served basis.

  1. Therapeutic or Deep Tissue Massages

    Times: Friday and Saturday by appointment (Scheduled timeslots via SignUp Genius. The link to sign-up will be provided one month before the retreat to women who are registered to attend.)

    Pricing: $70 for 1 hour; $40 for 30 minutes

    The talented Erica Rowe will again be our massage therapist for the retreat. Erica is a 20-year Board-Certified Massage Therapist and holds advanced certification in Pre/Postnatal Massage. She prides herself on customizing each Therapeutic/Deep Tissue session based on the client’s needs. She is the Founder/CEO of Sierra Massage Therapy & SMT Mobile.

    Since this is a popular activity, we are adding a second therapist this year. Shannon Curvey is contracted through SMT Mobile and is a Board-Certified Massage Therapist, owner of Function-N-Fitness and a Personal Trainer. She is highly effective in helping her clients achieve optimum mobility.

    What to Bring: When you arrive, present your completed and signed waiver (available at check-in at the retreat registration table).

    Prenatal massages must be authorized by a physician; a doctor’s note specifying the trimester needs to be emailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. no later than two days prior to your session. NO EXCEPTIONS will be made.

    As a courtesy to all, it is imperative that you be on time for your massage. Due to a full schedule, there will be no “make up” time if you arrive late for your appointment. When you arrive, wait for Erica to receive you. Please don’t knock on the door. Maximize your massage time by minimizing your prep time. Come with no jewelry and wear quick-change clothing.

    Please bring exact change and extra money for whatever gratuity you’d like to give (CASH ONLY).

  2. Yoga/Pilates

    Time:
    Saturday 12:45 – 1:45 PM
    Capacity: 40

    Cindy Warren, George Mason University adjunct professor and Pilates instructor, will lead us in a combination yoga and Pilates class. Come experience the core strengthening features of Pilates with the flexibility training of yoga! The class will end with a calming relaxation sequence. Cindy has planned a class that will be geared toward individuals of all fitness levels.

    What to bring: Bring a water bottle and your yoga/exercise mat (a limited number of mats will be available; bring your own if you have one). Please wear comfortable or athletic clothing that allows you to move freely.

    * All participants will be required to sign a waiver prior to the class (available at the retreat registration table).

  3. Aerobics

    Time:
    Saturday 2:00 – 3:00 PM
    Capacity: 40

    Leave your leg warmers at home and come join Lauren Gessner, an AFAA certified LesMills BodyStep instructor, for a cardio aerobic fitness workout! While we may not be sweatin' to the oldies, we will definitely work up a sweat with upbeat music, simple moves, and options for all fitness levels.

    What to bring: Bring a water bottle, mat (if you have one), and wear comfortable or athletic clothing that allows you to move freely.

    * All participants will be required to sign a waiver prior to the class (available at the retreat registration table).

  4. Crafting

    Times:
    Saturday 1:00 – 3:00 PM

    Join us as we create tea towels for displaying Bible verses in our homes. Choose from a selection of verses then add your own embellishments with paints.

    We will also use mixed media to create a word frame to remind us of truths we hope to take away and remember from our wonderful speakers. We will use paper, paint, glue, stamps, and then some.

    We hope you will join us for some simple crafting, no prior experience necessary. Feel free to stop by anytime during this session.

  5. Watercolor Painting

    Times:
    Saturday 1:30 – 3:00 PM
    Capacity: 15

    Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” Is your inner artist ready and waiting to be discovered? Come join us while we dabble in color and God’s beauty, learning some basic watercolor techniques and creating notecards and gift tags to take home with you. No experience is necessary – we will provide all needed supplies, just bring your smile and prepare to enjoy a peaceful time painting together.

  6. Games/Scrapbooking/Stamping

    Times:
    Friday 9:30 – 11:00 PM; Saturday 9:00 – 11:00 PM

    Does it seem like you don’t have enough time at home to catch up on your scrapbooking, stamping, or other projects? Well, bring your projects and supplies with you and enjoy time catching up with your friends and your projects! Or just grab a friend or two and enjoy your favorite board games! Scrabble, Monopoly, Dominoes and Rummikub will be available. Also feel free to bring your favorite game from home!

  7. Karaoke

    Time:
    Friday 9:30 – 11:00 PM

    Take a turn at the microphone or just sit back and enjoy the show. Bring some late-night snacks to share as we encourage each other and sing our hearts out!

  8. Morning Run

    Times:
    Saturday 7:00 AM

    Join fellow morning exercise enthusiasts for a run in the local neighborhood.

  9. Explore Local Attractions and Shopping

    Grab some friends and take a self-guided walking tour of Old Town Herndon, Frying Pan Farm, or Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum. You can also work out in the on-site fitness center and pool. Shopping abounds at nearby Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets, Reston Town Center, and Dulles Town Center. You could also catch a movie at Bow Tie Cinemas Reston Town Center or Regal Dulles Town Center. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can try iFly Indoor Skydiving or play a little golf at Topgolf in Ashburn.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

WHO MAY ATTEND?
All women High School age and up are welcome. Please invite your friends, family, and neighbors -- all women are welcome! (We will not have childcare. We love children but this is a women-only event – nursing infants are welcome though.)

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A ROOMMATE?
We would love this opportunity to get to know you better, and we know a lot of ladies who feel the same. It’s easy to find a potential roommate. Here are two ways to find a roommate:
1. Ask your designated spring retreat organizer in your Adult Bible Fellowship (ABF).
2. Ask for assistance at the Women’s Spring Retreat information table in the Atrium after service.

HOW AND WHEN DO I REGISTER?
There are three options for registration beginning December 2nd:

  1. Fill out the form below to register online.
  2. Meet us after service at our table in the Atrium to register in person.
  3. Go to the IBC Bookstore to register.

Don’t forget that the early bird registration rates end February 11!

WHAT ACTIVITIES ARE AVAILABLE FOR FREE TIME?
We have a lot of great activities planned for free times, but you can also use this time on your own.

Here are a few examples of the activities we have planned:

  • “Not Your Mother’s Aerobics” Class: This is a step class, without the step!
  • Pilates/Yoga
  • Massage therapist: 30 min or 1 hour massage times will be available for booking from Friday to Saturday night. Check back for more information to book a session. (This activity involves a separate fee.)
  • Crafting: Join Kim Hill as she shows us how to make tea towels.
  • Karaoke
  • Games in the ballroom
  • Photo booth
  • Morning runs, and more!

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Don’t forget your Bible, notebook, pen, an open mind, and an open heart.

Plan for three days and two nights at the hotel. Grab a swimsuit if you would like to go swimming, the hotel pool will remain open for us.

Don’t forget workout clothes if you would like to join the aerobics class, morning runs, or workout on your own.

HOW SHOULD I DRESS?
Casual! Jeans are fine, dresses are fine -- whatever makes you most comfortable.

AM I REQUIRED TO STAY AT THE HOTEL?
This year we are offering an option for ladies who would like to commute to the retreat. Take advantage of our “Commuter Option” at registration, and be sure to join us in the hospitality suite near the conference rooms before and after the sessions each day. The suite will have snacks, refreshments, and comfortable seating for you to relax and meet up with other ladies from the conference.

WHAT MEALS ARE INCLUDED WITH REGISTRATION?
Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday are included with the registration fee. Lunches are open for you to make your own plans. We will also have dessert receptions following both the evening sessions.

Be sure to join us in the hospitality suite near the conference rooms before and after the sessions each day. The suite will have snacks, refreshments, and comfortable seating for you to relax and meet up with other ladies from the conference.

WILL I RECEIVE A CONFIRMATION AFTER REGISTRATION?
You will receive an e-mail confirmation after your registration has been processed. Final event details will be emailed a week or so before the retreat.
